What is the 'Manchester VSB'?
There is now just 156 days before the world's leading athletes line up for the London 2012 Olympic games. Between now and then Olympic fever will start to grip most of the nation. To make sure the city doesn't miss out, a new volunteer development programme called 'Manchester Volunteer Sport Bureau' has been set-up.
The bureau has been awarded an Inspire Mark through the London Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. It will be co-ordinated by Manchester City Council & Manchester Leisure to identify, train and deploy volunteers across Manchester to support sport and physical activity.
People from all backgrounds and areas of the community will be recruited with the sole objective of developing their skills and making them available to the people who really need help. No sports events, sports club, local community or school will be denied the knowledge and expertise these volunteers will bring.
Each and every volunteer will be offered free training and qualifications within sport, giving them their own pathway into employment or further volunteering.
I want to get involved, but how?
Getting involved couldn't be simpler; all you need to do is register your interest on this website with a few of your personal details to create your very own volunteer profile.
In a few days you will be contacted by one of our team to arrange an appointment to see our Volunteer Development Officer who will go through your interests and will create a personal development plan with you.
Once we have placed you in the area of your choice you can log your hours here online, it really couldn't be simpler. We are looking forward to helping to get you started working towards your training course or qualification.
I've never volunteered before, can anyone do it?
Yes, anyone can volunteer, just sign up and you're ready to go. You can do as much or as little as you like, we will try to fit it around your life. Volunteering is just as much about enjoying yourself as helping others, so we want to make sure it is as comfortable for you as possible.
Do I need any specific skills?
Anyone can take part, you don't need any skills or qualifications to begin volunteering. However, if you have any qualifications/experience already, please let us know. Some of the more specialised placements require some form of qualifications/experience and we can find one to suit you.
Ok, I'm thinking of signing up, what can I do?
There are so many different opportunities, whether it's sports events in Manchester, coaching in your local club, coaching/teaching sport in schools/the community. This is your opportunity to give something back to the people in your community and gain valuable experience in the process. So what's stopping you, our team are waiting to hear from you.
